City Urges Public to Donate Hair to Prevent Oil Leak
The Cebu City Government encourages the public to do their share in protecting the environment by donating cut hair to prevent the spread of grease in affected areas of Cebu. This call came after the oil spill from the recent ship collision has placed the Cebu Province under a calamity state.
The oil spill is reportedly now affecting coastal areas in Mactan Island, Cebu.
Human hair is actually helpful in containing oil in seas and other indigenous materials such as chicken feathers, coconut and corn husks, cogon leaves, among others, Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgar Labella said.
“It is a less costly mitigating measure,” Labella said in a news report.
Two boxes were prepared by the Office of the Mayor on Tuesday, an effort to inform the public that their hair could indeed save the environment. The donor can placed their donations in the said boxes placed within the strategic locations within the City Hall.
The first box is located at the entrance of the Mayor’s Office, Executive Building, while another bigger box is placed at the City Hall’s Legislative Building, ground floor for donations to the victims such as clothing, blankets, personal/hygiene necessities, slippers, etc. (GG, PIO Staff)
