Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Hotel Receives Top Environmental Award

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) presented Marco Polo Plaza Cebu hotel the Green Award in recognition for its outstanding environmental performance given during the recently concluded 3rd Environmental Congress in Cebu City.

The Green Award recognizes the overall compliance of an establishment on water quality standards, hazardous waste management, solid waste management and the implementing rules and regulations of the Clean Air Act. While it is mandated by law that all private and public companies must comply with these requirements to be given permit to operate by the DENR, a number of these establishments exceeded passing standards, thus recognized. As of the 3rd Environmental Congress, only 11 of the 2,000 companies in Central Visayas were given the special Green Award. Marco Polo Plaza Cebu is the only recipient of this award in the hotel industry.

In addition, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu hotel was also cited a certificate of recognition for complying with the Water Quality Standards within the recent three consecutive years. A certificate of recognition was also cited to other establishments for complying with the Air Quality Standards, still within the recent three consecutive years.

Engr. Joel Apduhan, Marco Polo Plaza Cebu Pollution Control officer stressed that the hotel’s facilitation of these environmental requirements goes beyond compliance. “While it is an annual procedure conducted by DENR to check our facility such as to gather waste water sample from our sewage treatment plant for water analysis, we at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu has always been committed to maintain extra effort to sustain our good performance in environmental standards,” Apduhan said.

Marco Polo Plaza Cebu hotel General Manager Hans Hauri emphasized the importance of consistency in meeting high standards of environmental control measures. “We are delighted to receive these awards of recognition, however more delighted that we have accomplished our part in helping save our environment. The immediate effects to minimize air pollution and discharge in water bodies are notable and must be sustained,” Hauri added.
