Skateboarding Sensation Margielyn Didal Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics
Cebuano Skateboarder Margielyn Didal officially qualifies for the Tokyo Olympics after World Skate, the international sports association for skateboarding and other roller sports, released the latest world rankings.
This makes Didal the 10th Filipino athlete to qualify for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
World Skate ranked Didal number 13 in the women’s street category despite her falling short of a finals berth in the Street World Championships in Rome held last week, in which she fell within the championship’s top 20 cutoff.
Despite the shortcoming, Margielyn was able to maintain the 13th position in the rankings of the women’s street category.
The first-ever Asian Games Skateboarding gold medalist and the reigning Southeast Asian (SEA) Games champion’s qualification makes her the only female from Southeast Asia to qualify in the Olympics’ debut skateboarding event.
Didal will be facing competitors from Japan and Brazil which features world number three Aori Nishimura, world number five Momiji Nishiya from Japan, and Pamela Rosa and Rayssa Leal from Brazil.
Margielyn will also face world number four Leticia Bufoni.
The Olympic street skateboarding event is scheduled on July 25 to 26, if not further delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. (GFB)
