Ex-Senator, Toledo Mayor Sonny Osmeña Passes Away at 86
Former Philippine senator and Toledo City Mayor John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña passed away on Tuesday, inside his condo unit in Cebu City.
The politician’s death was announced and confirmed by his sister Annie Osmeña. The cause of death of the late politician remains unknown but the remains of Osmeña has already been cremated.
In July 2020, Osmeña tested positive for COVID-19 but managed to fully recover.
The Senate of the Philippines called him the “lone ranger” for embracing independent mindedness.
Osmeña was born on January 17, 1935, and earned a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of San Carlos (USC). He also pursued further studies by attending different universities such as the University of the Philippines (UP) and the International Social Development Institution in Holland.
Osmeña became senator in 1971-1972, 1987 to 1995, and 1998 to 2004.
He was the son of Emilio Osmeña and Ma. Louisa Renner and the brother of former Cebu governor Emilio “Lito” Osmeña. He is also the grandson of the late Philippine President Sergio Osmeña Sr.
Meanwhile, yesterday, Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella issued executive order no. 119 declaring a citywide mourning for Osmeña. The citywide mourning is from February 3 to February 5 of as a way of tribute to the late senator. (MLC)
