Locally Manufactured Cars Encouraged for Filipinos

As the Philippine locomotive industry faces challenging times, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez encouraged Filipinos to buy locally assembled cars to help save the industry in the country.

According to Lopez, there are eight models of locally assembled vehicles in the country.

Toyota’s Vios
Innova models
Mitsubishi’s Mirage
L300 models
Hyundai Accent
Isuzu N-Series light trucks
Hino trucks
Foton Tornado light trucks

With an ongoing pandemic hurting the industry, Nissan has already planned to cease its operation of the Nissan Almera here in the Philippines. Honda and Isuzu also announced the cessation of manufacturing and operations of automobiles such as the D-MAX.

Along with the ongoing pandemic, the influx of imported cars also hurt the local industry.

Moreover, DTI has imposed a provisional safeguard measure on imported completely built-up units.

A safeguard measure of PHP70,000 per unit for imported passenger cars and PHP110,000 per unit on imported light commercial vehicles. The safeguard will be effective for 200 days. (ASC)
