PH’s Security of Tenure Bill Passes Final Reading

The Security of Tenure Bill in the Philippines now passed the third and final reading and was approved by the House of Representatives.

Also known as House Bill 7036, it aims make amendments in the current labor code of the Philippines.

Security of Tenure, which primarily aims to protect every worker’s employment will give the working class the right to a stable job. It also prohibits companies to perform exploitations such as fixed and contractual employment, temporary replacements and other similar acts.

The bill however does not cover overseas Filipino workers.

Businesses who fail to adapt the said bill may face administrative cases or closure of their business.

204 lawmakers voted affirmative, 7 negated and 3 decided to abstain.

However, if a contractor does not have control over its workers’ method, the contractor does not have sufficient and substantial investment and workers are performing activities which are directly related to the business of the employer, then “labor-only” contracting will be allowed. (MLC)
