Verbena Hotel: From a Humble Eatery to a Successful Hotel

Published

on

Every success story we heard comes from a humble beginning. The Urgello Family’s beloved Hotel came from a simple idea too.

Verbena’s drive to serve its customers through impeccable service and hospitality started in the year 1976 when Verbena Hotel we know today was still a humble makeshift eatery named Cozy Nook.

The eatery was put up at the garage of Engr. Pedro Urgello along Verbena Street, now called Don Gil Garcia Street. The eatery was famous for its Fish Head Tinola and Caldereta that mainly served taxi drivers but also drew great attention from other customers.

It gained more popularity among office workers in the vicinity and got its moniker “Back Han Palace” — since it was located at the back of the former Great Han Palace Restaurant.

In 1986, Mrs. Justina Urgello, the wife of Engr. Urgello came to an idea to open their own lodging house to serve students who are looking for a safe and affordable place to stay.

She loaned money from the bank for the construction of the 3-story lodging house where in just two years, the lodging house quickly grew into a pension house and became the longest-running pension house in Cebu.

Today, it is now known as Verbena Hotel, one of the successful local hotels in Cebu. The hotel enters a new phase providing more dynamic and modern service without compromising the values inherited from its humble history.

Verbena Hotel’s story is an inspiration, you may start as a small business today but with hard work, perseverance, and God’s grace success can be achieved.
