AboitizPower Subsidiary Continues Efforts to Expand Carbon Sink

Steadfast in its commitment to environmental stewardship, AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI) recently planted 700 Indian tree seedlings within the power plant complex last February 29, 2020.

“This tree planting activity is our most recent effort under our Carbon Sink Management Program or CSMP, where we aim to plant and grow one million trees to sequester the plant’s emissions,” said TVI Deputy Plant Manager Noel Q. Cabahug.

Established in 2016, the CSMP aims to create a carbon sink by forging partnerships with farmers across Cebu to reach the one-million target. A carbon sink is any natural environment, like a forest or the ocean, which absorbs more carbon than it releases and thereby lowers the concentration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

TVI has also partnered with Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) for the implementation of the project and to provide partner farmers with a sustainable alternative means of livelihood.

Apart from adding to the CSMP target, the 700 seedlings will also expand the buffer zone of TVI. Three hundred seedlings were also planted earlier in October 2019 along the perimeter of the plant complex for the buffer zone. The seedlings were a mix of indigenous species such as toog, kalumpit, ilang-ilang, amugis, and banaba.

To date, TVI has planted and grown more than 374,000 trees across Cebu under the CSMP.

AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Visayas, Inc. is the operator of the 340-megawatt Toledo Baseload Power Plant located in Brgy. Bato, Toledo City, Cebu. TVI is certified in three ISO standards, namely Quality Management (ISO 9001:2015), Environmental Management (ISO 14001:2015), Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSAS 45001:2018). The facility is an 80-20 joint venture between Aboitiz Power Corporation and Vivant, Corp. respectively. Together with Therma Luzon, Inc. and Therma South, Inc., the three primarily compose the Coal Business Unit of AboitizPower.
