A highly-pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza in a quail farm was detected at Jaen, Nueva Ecija, the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed on Monday.

After reports came that 1,500 of 15,000 quails died in the farm at Barangay Ulanin-Pitak, live sample quails tested positive for the avian influenza, DA Secretary William Dar said.

Dar added that 12,000 quails have been surgically stamped out, with proper cleaning and disinfection procedures with immediate disease control measures were implemented to further mitigate the spreading of H5N6.

“The highly-pathogenic avian influenza is a disease of poultry that can affect humans. However, the H5N6 which affected the Philippines, has not affected humans in the country,” he added. (GFB)
