SK Tisa’s Livelihood Training Receives an Award in International Youth Day
The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in Barangay Tisa in Cebu City received an award for their livelihood training program called UC Cares Tisa.
The program, in partnership with University of Cebu (UC) was awarded the Most Outstanding SK under the economic empowerment during the International Youth Day dubbed as #YOUthCan, unleashing the power of the youth in Davao City on August 12 this year.
The program started on November 2018 and its main goal is to provide free skills training to the out-of-school youth in Barangay Tisa.
Sonial Cal, SK Chairman of Barangay Tisa said that the program really complements the interest of the youth.
“What makes it special is that it is the discretion of the youth. We get to know their interest so that we can align it with the courses of UC,” Cal said.
Last August 12, Cal along with her SK councilors flew to Davao City to receive the said award.
They are the only SK in Cebu to compete with different SK in the country.
“We are inviting companies to do partnership with us because the goal of this project is to let the trainees undergo an on-the-job training (OJT), for them to gain experience and apply what they learned,” added Cal.
Richard Pilapil, 23, a person with special needs was one of the successful graduates of the program wherein he is already working in one of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies in Cebu.
The skills training happens every Saturday for the span of six months.
Among the training that were offered are cooking, baking and pastries, web development, and office literacy. (MLC)
