ZumbAktibo: A Push for Physical Activity and Healthy Diet

The National Nutrition Council Region VII and the Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Committee launched its 2019 social media campaign entitled #ZumbAktibo. This is a dance challenge that aims to encourage people to have a more physically active lifestyle through a dance. The launching of the campaign was made on 01 July 2019 during the opening event of the 45th Nutrition Month held at the Cube Wing, SM Seaside City, Cebu.

Using social media to influence and the rise of viral videos, the activity’s objective is to put a significant decrease in overweight and obesity prevalence in the region, encourage people to be physically active through dance and disseminate the message on the importance of having appropriate weight. Based on the 2018 National Nutrition Survey, 3 out of 100 children under five years old in Central Visayas are overweight. Two in every 10 adults have high blood pressure and high cholesterol level and 5 in every 100 have high blood sugar level.

The campaign includes a dance challenge in the tune of the 2017 Nutrition Month jingle “Timbang Iwasto” and is hoped to go viral in Central Visayas. The said dance challenge incorporates simple dance moves to cater all age groups and can be done anytime, anywhere. This will also create a much wider engagement within the populace.

All netizens are encouraged to upload their own video of the ZumbAktibo dance moves and use the hashtag #ZumbAktibo.

Members of the Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Committee along with the local government units are also expected to join the ZumbAktibo Dance Challenge as they participate in the regional simultaneous Zumba dance activity on 08 July 2019. The ZumbAktibo dance challenge will be accompanied by a recipe making competition to be participated in by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars in the region.
