Avoid Beaches — BFAR

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-7 advised the public not to soak in some of the beaches in Mactan due to the presence of jellyfish.

BFAR-7 Regional Director Alfeo Piloton said that when the weather is extremely hot, there is a large number of jellyfish present in beaches.

“Yes, natural phenomenon kana siya. Usually summertime na sila mogawas. Ang gimonitor namo ang mga existing fish cages (Yes it is a natural phenomenon. Usually they come out during summertime. We are also currently monitoring the existing fish cages),” Piloton said

Head of the BFAR Provincial Fishery Office in Cebu Edgar Delfin said that they haven’t received any report regarding jellyfish related incident as of the moment.

Delfin explained that jellyfish have poison and it could affect the gills of the fish.

Jellyfish are present in beaches as they are casted away from the ocean.

Delfin advised the parents and also their children to stay away from beaches as of the moment to avoid possible troubles.

Jellyfish grow from 3-4 weeks before it swims in to the ocean.

Aside from Mactan, other beaches in the whole province of Cebu also have strong jellyfish presence.

Next month, on June, jellyfish are expected to move out from the beaches and return to the ocean. (MLC)
