DOST Installs STARBOOKS in 21 Kalinga Schools

Twenty one schools in the province have now online research access in mathematics and science through the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station (STARBOOKS) recently installed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Crystal Joy Tayab of DOST-Cordillera said the project is under the DOST’s Science for the People program that caters to science and math research needs especially of students in far-flung localities. This is part of the department’s agenda to develop science and technology culture ’among Filipino students especially those in remote areas who have limited access to libraries.

STARBOOKS is a digital library that serves as one-stop repository of S&T information. Software installation is provided depending on the request of partner-institutions under the project.

Once installed, information on the STARBOOKS can be accessed even without internet connectivity, which is ideal in remote places.

DOST plans to put-up more STARBOOKS sets in various sites throughout the region and will provide solar panels to schools with no regular power supply.

Since the launching of the program in 2011, DOST-CAR had deployed at least 144 STARBOOKS sets in different schools in the region. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
