In a momentous agreement, the Philippines and Australia have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create a vibrant ‘Work and Holiday’ visa arrangement. This development opens up fantastic opportunities for young travelers from both nations who dream of experiencing life abroad while financing their adventures.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu penned this groundbreaking seven-page MOU. Under the terms of this collaboration, citizens of both countries will have the chance to obtain a multiple-entry visa for a non-extendable period of up to one year, permitting them to work during their stay.

The MOU was inked during the much-anticipated official visit of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to Malacañang on September 8. It stands as one of the key MOUs signed during his visit to the Philippines.

According to the MOU, eligible participants from both nations will be granted a ‘Work and Holiday’ visa, allowing them to live, work, and explore the host country for a full year. This innovative program was established to encourage nationals of both countries to spend their holidays abroad, where they can engage in work to support their stay.

The ‘Work and Holiday’ visa program is open to young Filipino and Australian citizens aged 18 to 31 who have either graduated from tertiary education or successfully completed at least two years of undergraduate or post-secondary education. Health, character, and national security requirements must be met, along with having medical and health insurance for the duration of their stay.

This 12-month period commences from the date of first entry, and participants can leave and return to the host country using the same visa. Throughout their stay, all participants must adhere to the laws and regulations of the host country.

The MOU also acknowledges that each participant reserves the right to deny specific visa applications in line with their domestic laws and regulations. It emphasizes that nationals granted a ‘Work and Holiday’ visa under this agreement may be refused entry or removed from the other participant’s territory, following the laws and regulations of that participant.

Applicants are required to cover any fees associated with the visa application process. Furthermore, ‘Work and Holiday’ visa holders are entitled to work during their visit, subject to the employment conditions specified by the host government.

The MOU is set to come into effect on a date mutually determined by both parties and will remain valid indefinitely unless terminated by written notice through diplomatic channels.

This exciting ‘Work and Holiday’ visa arrangement promises an incredible opportunity for young people from both the Philippines and Australia to embark on a memorable journey of cultural exchange and exploration, all while gaining valuable work experience. It’s a win-win for those eager to broaden their horizons and discover new horizons Down Under. (ASC)
