The Cebu provincial government begins construction of the P6.7 million Level II waterworks system in Badian town that covers barangays Matutinao, Malabago, Hinablan and Balhaan.

The waterworks project includes installing pipelines tapped from an underground source in Kabukalan spring located in the upstream part of Kawasan Falls.

Piping system was used to transport water from higher elevations by building graduated segments of pipes or tubular sections that allowed gravity to push the water along until it reaches its destinations.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III explained to residents that lack of drinking water, as among the common problems of the town, prompted the Province to focus its effort towards providing water transport projects for Badian residents.

Ang tubig maoy usa sa pinakabatakan na panginahanglan sa tawo mao ang inyong provincial government naningkamot gayud na mahatag kini nga proyekto diha kaninyo,” said Davide during the groundbreaking ceremony held on November 26.

Davide said that once completed, the pipeline can supply an estimated 100 cubic meters of drinking water per day to each barangays.

Last September, water shortage was among those discussed during the first consultative assembly of the Capitol’s Caravan of Services program. The project’s launching was held in Badian, where residents were given the opportunity to determine appropriate community projects.

Badian town in southwest Cebu is known to have abundant water sources with its famous Kawasan Falls in Barangay Matutinao. However, some of the barangays near the famous falls experienced a shortage of drinking water caused by lack of pipelines.

Provincial Engineer Hector Jamora, whose office supervises the implementation of the projects, said the laying of pipelines would be completed in the next 125 days.

Nalipay kaayo ko na dili na mi maglisod sa tubig, hilabi na hago intawon kaayo mi nga magsige of kawos,” said 51-year-old Maura Nobyano, a resident of Barangay Matutinao.

The groundbreaking ceremony was witnessed by town officials led by Mayor Carmencita Librando-Lumain and Vice Mayor Fructuso Caballero.

Also present during event were 7th district Provincial Board members Christopher Baricuatro and Jerome Librando as well as Congressman Peter John Calderon.

Nagsugod na ang katumanan sa atong mga saad og dili kini mahimo kung wala ang paningkamot ni Gov. Junjun,” said Calderon.

Moreover, Capitol officials also completed a separate Level II water piping project in Barangay Zaragoza, an islet off Badian town. The pipeline, estimated at 1,980 kilometer, obtains its source from Sitio Sima, Barangay Poblacion in Badian.

Officials said Capitol spent close to P500,000 for the pipelines in order to give a decent water supply to the residents of Zaragosa.

In the same ceremony, Capitol turned over a multi-purpose center to Barangays Basak and Banhigan with a total worth of P4 million and led the groundbreaking of a tourism center in Barangay Matutinao.

The tourism center, which costs P500,000, will serve as briefing area for local and foreign tourists in canyoneering activities. (Kelvin Canizares)
