Gender Issues Center NMP Workshop

Tacloban City, Leyte – Aimed on raising the awareness level of the employees of the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), a three-day seminar workshop was given to them on gender issues and concepts.

Done on October 5 to 7 at the Sophia’s Way, Leyte Park Hotel, Tacloban City, the activity gave the participants the basic understanding and knowledge on basic gender concepts that are affective of their functions to include those affecting ttheir families.

The seminar used the gender analysis tools that is referred as “gender mainstreaming evaluation framework and harmonized gender and development guidelines”.

This was expected to ensure the gender-responsiveness of NMP programs and projects.

The participants were told to identify some substantial gender issues affecting NMP’s clients – the Filipino seafarers and the agency itself.

Other outputs included the proposed gender-responsive programs and projects to address such identified issues, and the draft NMP GAD Plan for 2017-2019.

Former Assistant Regional Director Ms. Ma. Purisima E. Sanopo, of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region VIII, now an expert on gender sensitivity, gender-based analysis and gender–responsive development planning served as resource person.

In response to her inputs, Atty. Ruben Y. Maceda, NMP Officer-in-Charge and Head of the Administrative, Financial and Management Division said that they found out that some gender issues are more complicated than what they knew.

“We were at a loss before this training. Now, we know how to spend our budget for GAD-related programs. We are very thankful to Ms. Sanopo for sharing with us her expertise.” Maceda said bared out.

In response, Sanopio said she was impressed with the group for being true in expressing their thoughts and opinions.

“I hope that the insights gained from this seminar will also be applied to your personal lives”, Sanopo concluded.

Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women (MCW), Republic Act 7192 or the Women in Development and Nation Building Act and Executive Order No. 273 or Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (PPGD) 1995-2025 institutionalize GAD efforts in government through mainstreaming gender dimensions into plans, programs and activities towards women empowerment, gender equality and gender equity.
