Cebu City Starts Dumping Garbage at Reopend Sanitary Landfill

The Cebu City government started dumping its garbage at the reopened Inayawan Sanitary Landfill in Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City on Wednesday.

Outgoing Cebu City Councilor Ma. Nida Cabrera said the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 7 has approved the city’s application to reopen the facility.

Officials opted to reopen the facility, which was closed last year, as the city had fully consumed Tuesday its PHP32-million dumping fees at the Asian Energy Systems Corp., a private landfill in Consolacion town in northern Cebu.

But Cabrera said said the city government will have to comply with all the commitments they submitted to the EMB 7.

Among them are the creation of a conceptual master plan for the landfill, the establishment of a material recovery facility inside the landfill, memorandum of agreement on the creation of the multi-partite monitoring team, environmental monitoring fund and environmental guarantee fund.

Cabrera said the city will also finalize the closure and rehabilitation plan and the 10-year solid waste management plan for the landfill.

Of the estimated 15.4 hectares in the landfill, Cabrera said at least five hectares can still accommodate trash for at least two years.

She said all garbage truck drivers in the 80 barangays will be directed to dump all their collected waste in the landfill.

Cabrera said the city will also strengthen the “no collection, no segregation policy.” (PNA) SCS/EB/EDS
