England Fans Sentenced to Jail For Euro 2016 Violence
Five English football fans are sentenced to prison by a French court due to the violence that was displayed on Saturday’s England-Russia match at Euro 2016.
The sentences ranged between one months to three months and also disallowed entry to France for two years.
Alexander Booth, 20, Ian Hepworth, 41, Paul Jackson, 21, Ashley Kelly, 26, and Lee Philipps, 23, were charged with throwing bottles at either the police, rival supporters or both. A minor was also charged with the same actions.
Russian and English fans throwing chairs and bottles in the public squares of Marseille were covered by news before and after the said match.
Chief Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said that no Russian was arrested with the same reason as the England fans. Although, two Russian fans have been arrested for pitch invasion.
At least 35 people were injured in the violence that happened.
UEFA’s executive committee said the England and France football teams could face sanction, including potential disqualification if the violence created by their fans continues.
Disciplinary proceedings have been opened by UEFA against the Russian Football Union because of the behavior of its fans.
“UEFA expresses its utter disgust for the violent clashes that occurred in the city center of Marseille, and its serious concern for the incidents at the end of the match inside Stade Velodrome. This kind of behavior is totally unacceptable and has no place in football,” said UEFA.
