PAGASA Warns Of Heat Threat To Livestock, Crops

The government has urged livestock growers and farmers nationwide to further protect their farm animals and crops against heat, warning temperature can surge to 38°C in lowland farms and 28°C during the 24-hour forecast period ending Tuesday.

“Protect farm animals from so much heat and give plenty of water,” state-run Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its advisory released Monday.

PAGASA said farmers must mulch their newly planted crops to help maintain soil moisture these require, as dry soil condition is likely in most parts of the country during the forecast period.

Livestock growers and farmers must likewise check their farm animals and crops for possible pests and diseases so they can address these problems accordingly as soon as possible, PAGASA continued.

The weather bureau said ridge of a high-pressure area is extending over Luzon.

“The easterlies are affecting the eastern section of the Visayas and Mindanao,” PAGASA added.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are still possible during the forecast period mostly over the eastern section of the Visayas and Mindanao, it noted.

PAGASA also cautioned about fishing and sailing, noting coastal waters over the whole country will be “slight to moderate”.

Light to moderate winds are expected from the east to southeast in Luzon and from the east to northeast in the Visayas and Mindanao.

“Fishermen are still advised to always take precautionary measures, especially those using small seacraft, and be updated for the latest weather forecast and farm advisories,” it added. (PNA) LDV/CJT/EDS
