Governor Hilario P. Davide III approves the request of Daanbantayan Women’s Federation to be included in the Bugasan sa Kababayen-an project in a meeting last Dec. 9 at the Capitol Dignitaries Lounge.

Davide assured the group the authenticity of his approval, saying that he and Vice Governor Agnes Magpael will attend the launching of the project in their municipality as part of their support for the empowerment of women.

Bugasan sa Kababayen-an Project was launched in 2010 by the Cebu Provincial Women’s Federation Association in five municipalities, including Catmon, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Boljoon, and Tuburan. It was also implemented in 29 municipalities in the province.

It is part of the sustainable livelihood program of the Cebu Provincial Government that also funded this project.

It aims to increase income and improve the entrepreneurial skills of the women in the province through buy and sell of National Food Authority (NFA) rice.

Through this project, ten sacks of NFA rice is given as starting capital to an accredited association, serving as seed money to start their retail business.

At present the Municipality of Carmen got the highest net profit among the municipalities in the province.

By becoming part of the project, Daanbantayan Women’s Federation would now have its first livelihood project, according to its president Delia Etcuban.

“Kinahanglan gyud nga may panginabuhian ang mga kababayen-an sa Daanbantayan ug dako ug ikatabang kanamo ang kini nga proyekto (Our group really need a source of livelihood and this project would definitely help us),” said Etcuban, adding that it would ultimately help the people of Daanbantayan.

Etcuban noted that rice is a basic need and demand for it is high. Also, people are looking to buy cheaper rice. She believes her group can sell the supply of rice that the Provincial Government will provide them to roll off their source of income.

Etcuban together with the other women’s leaders in the organization already passed the letter request to the Governor.

Etcuban said they will wait for the day when the seed capital will be given to them so they can immediately start selling.

There are 34 women’s organizations in the 20 barangays of Daanbantayan and majority are already registered and federated in the Department of Labor and Employment and Securities and Exchange Commission.
