Talisay to Host Drag Racing

In its effort to recognize talents of drag racers, the Talisay City government will host the first drag racing event this October 13 at the Cebu South Coastal Road.

Bryan Renejane, the event organizer, said “since drag racing despite it’s being banned is still actively done by some city residents, might as well organize it, but this time ‘providing safety measures’ to the riders.”

Renejane said the event hopes to encourage drag racers to always put their safety first above anything else.

For his part, Mayor Johnny delos Reyes, who admitted to being a racer himself, said it is about time that the city “showcases the talents and skills” of these drag racers once in a while.

There is an existing city ordinance that prohibits drag racing, but Delos Reyes has issued an executive order dated Oct. 8, 2013 allowing the said activity in the city’s grounds.

Renejane said at least 100 racers from the city and other provinces are expected to participate in the event, which kicks off at 6 am on Oct. 13.

As to the safety of the drivers, he said “they have already surveyed the whole stretch of the road where the race will take place, and on the day of the event, rescue personnel will be posted in the area in case of emergency.”
