SWMB Conducts Orientation on Requirements for Food Establishments

After learning that some fast food chains have been violating the provisions of Republic Act 9003 particularly the disposal of their daily food wastes, the Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) conducted an orientation today that was attended by some store managers from four (4) major food establishments operating in this city.

Atty. Janeses Ponce, chairman of SWMB stressed that on their recent monitoring some violations committed by food establishments are: Non-segregation of garbage; improper disposal of solid and septage waste; improper handling and disposal of used cooking oil; gray water treatment and disposal; and non-compliance to Environmental Sustainability Action Plan (ESAP) ordinance.

Engr. Amancio Dongcoy, senior environmental specialist of EMB of DENR7 and member of SWMB briefed the participants about the proper handling of solid wastes based on the said law; handling of waste water compliance to RA 9275 or the Clean Water Act; handling of air pollution sources compliance with the Clean Air Act; and the handling of used vegetable oil/used engine oil of which establishments must register hazardous waste generator as required in RA 6969 (Toxic and Hazardous Waste Control Act) which was also being expounded by Engr. Alan Dinampo, of the Cebu Climate Change Association Inc. (CCCAI).

Dr. Daisy Villa, shared to the participants the guidelines for applications of sanitary permits and the health permits to individual personnel or employees and some new policies of the City Health Department which is under her leadership. (Cebu City Public Information Office)
