SIM Card Registration Law IRR Released
All mobile phone users, new and old alike, must be able to register their subscriber identification module (SIM) starting on December 27, according to the regulations released for Republic Act No. 11934, or the SIM Card Registration Act.
This comes as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) released the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for the SIM Card Registration Act on Monday, which prescribes the corresponding procedures and guidelines for the implementation of the new law.
According to the IRR, mobile phone users will have six months to register their SIM, or else risk the deactivation of the card.
Moreover, upon deactivation of the SIM due to the failure to register it, a user will only be given five days to register the SIM and reactivate it.
The registration of SIMs will be done through a secure platform which will be provided by each user’s service provider, where users will be prompted to input personal information such as the user’s complete name, date of birth, address, and sex.
Moreover, users will also be prompted to upload a copy of a valid identification card.
According to the IRR, the personal information sent by the end-user will be treated confidentially unless otherwise obliged by law to disclose a user’s personal information under certain instances. (GFB)
