Schools Now Part of SugBusog Program
The Cebu provincial government has tapped into schools, including them into the SugBusog Program to help combat hunger in the region.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia led the launching of the “SugBusog sa Eskuwelahan Program” at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, to help promote backyard gardening in schools.
The program is part of the “SugBusog: Sugboanong Busog Luwas ug Himsog” — a program of the Cebu provincial government that promotes backyard gardening to combat hunger. This program was launched last year aim to provide food security for Cebuanos amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The “SugBusog sa Eskuwelahan Program” will also be held as a competition for schools. All schools will first compete at a district level. The winner at the district level will then compete for the legislative district level award.
Finally, the winners of the legislative district level will then compete for the provincial award.
Additional points are given to schools that can plant medicinal herbs with assistance from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The overall winner of the competition will win an infrastructure project that will be funded by the Cebu provincial government.
Garcia also urges the municipal and city agriculturists to teach the proper way of backyard gardening in schools.
The Department of Agriculture Central Visayas Regional Director Salvador Diputado said the department will provide seeds, native chicken, organic fertilizers, and farming tools to schools. (ASC)
