NDRRMC Convenes for Low Pressure Area

Members of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) Core Group met in preparation for the effects of the Low Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), at the NDRRM Operations Center, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Officer-In-Charge Asec Kristoffer James E Purisima presided over the meeting attended by representatives from NDRRM Member Agencies, namely: DOST-PAGASA, DENR-MGB, DILG, DSWD, DOH, DepEd, DICT, NEDA, PNP, AFP, and PIA. Regional DRRM Councils II, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, V, VIII, XI and CARAGA likewise joined the meeting via videoconference call.

PAGASA reported that as of 2 pm today, the LPA inside PAR was located at 770 km East of Surigao del Norte. It is expected to develop into a Tropical Depression within 24 hours and will be named “Domeng”.

The prevailing weather system is not expected to make landfall, however moderate to heavy and sometimes intense rains are expected over the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Ilocos Region, and the Provinces of Zambales and Bataan beginning Thursday, June 7, 2018, until Sunday, June 10, 2018. In addition, the rains brought about by the LPA may trigger the onset of the Habagat in the country.

The National Council has advised all concerned Regional DRRM Councils to undertake necessary preparedness actions immediately. DILG disseminated relevant advisories and updates to local government units. DSWD ensured the availability of standby funds and the prepositioning of necessary Food and Non-Food Items both at the national and regional levels. MGB has warned low-lying areas of possible landslides.

The NDRRM Operations Center will continue to monitor updates on the prevailing weather system, while the concerned Regional DRRM Councils will raise its alert status to BLUE, effective 5 pm, today. The PDRA Core Group shall meet again on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at 4 pm. (NDRRMC)
