MIT Researchers Working on All-in-One Diabetic Device for Insulin Injection
Diabetes patients face numerous challenges, particularly during meals. They must not only monitor their blood glucose levels and administer the appropriate amount of insulin, but also transport all necessary equipment.
However, researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital believe that many headaches will be eliminated in the near future. They’re working on all-in-one gadgets that tests for glucose, compute the required insulin dose, and inject you with it.
The blood-drawing lancet, glucose test strips, and an insulin needle are included with the first device. To assess the food volume and carbohydrate levels, users would first
take a photo of their meal with a smartphone app. The second device would only require one needle prick – the glucose sensor would be built into the insulin needle, and it would deliver the correct amount of insulin.
The technology is still some ways off. Both devices have been granted patents, and scientists hope to collaborate with businesses on further development. (CT)
