Mandaue Starts Day Care School Built on “Green Technology”
Mandaue City – The first day care school in the city that uses “green technology” was formally inaugurated Thursday, Mandaue News Service said.
The facility, which is also typhoon-resilient, was designed by Philippines Institute of Technology (PICE-Cebu Chapter) and constructed by Cebu Contractors Association (CCA). It has a floor area of 63 square meters and located at the entrance of 8.5 hectare area in Paknaan, home to 1,200 families of informal settlers from the danger zones along Mahiga Creek and Butuanon River.
The building utilizes natural lighting system and air so as to conserve the use of energy.
“We are asking the beneficiaries to take care of the facility so that other children can use it,” said Engr. Daisy Toledo, president of PICE-Cebu, who also revealed that the design is the winner in the national contest organized by the PICE national.
On the other hand, Engr. Paul Dy, president of Cebu Contractors Association (CCA) said they spent P600,000 for the construction of the facility which he said can be used also as evacuation center in case of calamity or disaster.
“We assured the donors that we will take care of the love project,” said Leopoldo Chavez, president of the 12-member management team representing the 12 homeowners’ organizations.
Jinky Guevara, Day Care Center teacher, said a total of 60 students from the area are already enrolled, 30 in the morning session and another 30 in the afternoon session.
Toledo said their group is open for another project depending on the request by the organization, adding that as a help they have also donated more than 1,000 truckloads of filling materials.
The area has to be elevated since it is located along Mactan Channel.
Site development of the relocation area conducted by the city government in partnership with the private sector is 50 percent complete, according to Tony Pet Juanico, head of the city’s Housing, Urban Development office (HUDO).
The area is subdivided at 28 square meter for each family-beneficiary purchased under the Community Mortage Program. The Social Home Finance Corporation purchased the area from the owner and in return the, the homeowners’ organization will amortize the amount in monthly installments for a maximum of 25 years.
Leopoldo Chavez, president of the 12-member management council of the area said the beneficiaries have two options: they may avail of the housing program offered by Philippine Action for Community-led Shelter Initiatives, Inc. (PACSI) or build their own houses.
At present, a total of 80 houses were constructed with PACSI assistance.
Paknaan Barangay Captain Malaquias Soco, for his part, said he has constructed a barangay outpost in the area to be manned by a tanod recommended by the organization. Mandaue News Service (MNS)
