Labella Asks Village Officials to Double Efforts to Collect Trash
Acting Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has appealed to the city’s village officials to double their efforts in collecting garbage, especially in the south district villages.
Labella turned to the village officials after the city used up its budget for garbage disposal.
The city collects about 300 tons of garbage daily.
The Cebu City Council approved a budget of Php 51 million for garbage collection and disposal this year out of the executive department’s proposed PHP120 million budget for the purpose.
The Php51 million lasted only up to April prompting the executive department to ask for additional Php50 million.
It was approved by the Council but it only lasted up to August.
Labella said he has received complaints about uncollected garbage in the villages, especially in the city’s south district.
He said garbage collection and disposal are among the services affected by the Council’s decision to suspend deliberations and approval of the first supplemental budget this year amounting to Php3.32 billion.
Of the amount, Php87 million is for garbage collection and disposal.
The city is paying Php700 per ton of garbage dumped at a private landfill in the northern Cebu town of Consolacion. (PNA) /JSV/EB/EDS
