G8 Calls for Syria Transitional Government
In a final communique, leaders of the world’s most powerful nations has strongly endorsed calls for a peace conference on the Syria conflict “as soon as possible.”
The communique, however, have not made mention of the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.
At the conclusion of the two-day summit on Northern Ireland Tuesday, the G8 leaders also called for an agreement on a transitional government in Syria that would be formed by mutual consent, and that the military and security services “must be preserve and restored” in a future set-up.
” We remain committed to achieving a political solution to the crisis based on a vision for a united inclusive and democratic Syria” said the final communique. It added ” We strongly endorse the decision to hold as soon as possible the Geneva conference on Syria.”
Summit host British Prime Minister David Cameron said it was “unthinkable” that Assad could play a role in a transitional administration in Syria.
” You can’t imagine a Syria where this man continues to rule having done such terrible things to his people” Cameron said in a press conference after the summit as he announced the 7-point plan on Syria.
Cameron added that while it was no secret there were different views, it was necessary to maximize the diplomatic pressure. He also said that they agreed to learn lessons from in Iraq and make sure there is no power vacuum in Syria.
