Cultivating a Healthy Mindset

on

Going through life means navigating the ups and downs that come with it. Most of the time, we are caught up in daily challenges no matter how small or simple they are, such as deciding what to have for dinner or whether we are picking the right shade of color to wear.

Oftentimes, we don’t let these things get in our head. We could just easily brush them off and go on about our life. However, there would also be times where these would have the power to make us feel good or bad about ourselves when we overthink it too much to the point that it affects our mindset and influences our lifestyle.

According to Catherine Beard from The Blissful Mind, “A healthy mindset involves finding ways to grow from your thoughts instead of letting them control your life.” Dwelling obsessively on either positivity or negativity can sometimes lead to poor decisions and mediocre work outputs. Our minds are powerful and capable enough to be able to bring us down whenever. You could be the most physically fit person out there but if your mind is filled with toxicity and other elements, you’d still feel like there will always be something missing.

I also struggled with thinking too much over things that are not really that much of importance to the point where it has affected me and the people around me. Sometimes my mind would have an inner battle with itself on whether I’m doing things right or wrong and whether the outcome of it will benefit me or not.

Overtime, I have learned to let go of overthinking for the sake of my mental health. These are five things I have come to practice to cultivate a healthy mindset:

1. Invest In a Productive Hobby

Hobbies are great ways to get us going. It can be as grand as engaging yourself with sports activities like swimming or simple creative hobbies like journaling. I have invested in sketching from time to time to enhance my skills in drawing and sometimes I pick up a book and read. You can find any hobby that will make you feel like you have done a good job in the end. Chances are you taking your mind off of things that are bothering you even for just a while as you immerse yourself in whatever hobby you have found.

2. Eat Good

Eating good does not automatically mean you should splurge on food that costs a lot of
money. Eating good can also mean that you are eating something that makes you feel good as long as you are not overdoing it to the point where it gets bad for your health. Our health is also something we have to consider as it can affect us physically and mentally. If you feel like going on a diet, do it as healthily as possible. Do not starve yourself.

3. Tidying Up Your Area

Cleaning or tidying up a messy place can be therapeutic to some. Other times it helps clear our mind and it puts us at ease looking at our surroundings being tidied up. Granted that not everyone is up for a general cleaning, decluttering some of the things we see on our desks or spaces that do not hold an ounce of significance can be quite helpful too. As the famous Japanese organizing consultant, Marie Kondo, once said, “We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.” Keep what you deem as worthy or important to you, get rid of the things that hold to no relevance in your life, and in a way let it help you clear your mind.

4. Say What’s Bothering You

We, as humans, have the ability to bottle up our feelings either in fear or being judged or bearing the thought of not wanting to bother others and continue to choose staying silent instead. Granted that not all of us are up for talking, and that’s okay. Saying what’s bothering us can also be done through written words. Some people even go so far as to make artworks due to their pent-up emotions. Whatever you choose, it’s better to let these out than hold it in. If someone is there willing to listen to you, be a therapist, a friend, or a family member, don’t let the opportunity go but grab it instead.

5. Limit Your Time On Social Media

Social Media has been the go-to place for most people that have access to the Internet lately. With the rise of technology, it is so easy to search topics and interact with people button or a finger-swipe on the screen. rainbows and shiny things. It is also a place filled with anonymous people whose existence is just there to sprout hate and malice. news with unreliable sources and attracting trouble and toxicity. Limiting your time on social media should be a practice considering that some people have the tendency to take whatever they read online personally that consumes them entirely. Do not burn yourself over social media.

Having a healthy mindset still depends on what is most comfortable for the person to do in order to achieve it. We are all different individuals with different personalities and hobbies, even different goals and dreams. Whatever we are trying to pursue in our life’s path, may we do it the right way with the right set of thinking and the ability to push through what challenges life can offer.
