Cebuanos Asked to Wear Their “Pinkiest” During Moonwalk

Cebuanos are invited to join the 13th Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Saturday, October 15, 2016. And they are encouraged to wear their “pinkiest” costumes for them to win handsome prices!

Moonwalk: A Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness is a unique advocacy campaign focused on early screening and detection of breast cancer through monthly breast self-examination and mammography.

With 870 deaths out of 1,415 breast cancer cases in 2008-2012, the Cebu population-based Cancer Registry of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.-Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (RAFI-EJACC) identified breast cancer as the leading cause of death among Cebuano women.

For this reason, the fight against the disease, which affects the lives of Cebuano women and their families, continues through this annual advocacy walk, which is held every full moon of October in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Assembly time for this year’s Moonwalk at the Fuente Osmeña rotunda is 4 p.m., with a pre-walk program at 5:30 p.m.  The program at Plaza Independencia in Cebu City, which would immediately follow after the walk, would feature testimonies and presentations of various cancer survivors.
One of highlights of the event is the “pinkiest costume” contest, whose winner would be announced during the program that would follow after the parade. By wearing pink, participants help remind their fellow Cebuanos to be aware about cancer, specifically breast cancer, and that they could overcome this dreaded disease and live normal lives again.

Aside from the pinkiest costume, Moonwalk participants can also join in the selfie and the groufie contests, whose winners would likewise be announced during the Moonwalk program.

Moonwalk is organized by RAFI-EJACC and supported by the Cebu City Government, Department of Health-7, Goldilocks, Alcordo Advertising, Cebu Cancer Fight Incorporated, and I CAN SERVE Foundation. It is one of several activities lined up in celebration of October as breast cancer awareness month.

Last October 8, RAFI and Barangay Tinago, Cebu City also launched a joint campaign to help increase the public’s awareness on breast cancer prevention with the ceremonial opening of Lopez Jaena Street as “Pink Street.”

Adorned with banderitas (buntings) that give the street a “fiesta” mood, the Pink Street is intended to remind Cebuanos to be aware about cancer, specifically breast cancer, and on the ways how to prevent it.
