Cebuano Hospitality an Investment for Economic Development
(PIA7) –- Cebuanos taking the extra mile during the holding of the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) meetings in Cebu will lead to economic activities in the future.
“The willingness to go the extra mile for guests is representative of the Cebuano culture and people who are known for being accommodating and hospitable. In the long term, such openness bodes well for Cebu’s developmental prospects, now that it has become known as destination for international meetings,” said Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Assistant Secretary and APEC spokesperson Charles Jose during the Sept. 3 press briefing at the Apec International Media Center here.
Jose said some changes were undertaken during the international event such as road closures and extended truck ban hours, which he admits have consequences for local residents and businesses.
“But we also wish to emphasize that Cebu stands to reap many benefits from this hosting,” he stressed.
He said in the long run, the meetings will help the quality of products and services aligning them with international standard in preparation for future events.
The resulting interest generated by APEC will be more investments expected to come in addition to the anticipated increase in tourist arrivals.
Before the start and during the holding of the 87 meetings, Jose said there have been additional jobs created for the hosting of the Apec meetings.
businesses and tourism were empowered as delegates and their entourage have been going around the province and neighboring islands after their meetings.
“Local farmers have also been able to bring home extra income, as a result of increased demand from hotels and restaurants,” he said.
Meanwhile, as delegates are encouraged to explore Cebu and nearby islands, Jose reminded them to keep the Information Desks in accredited hotels aware of their itinerary.
It is in the Information Desks where the delegates can avail of tours within and outside Cebu.
“We encourage our visitors to explore the natural beauty of Cebu and its neighboring islands, but at the same time, we ask that they undergo proper registration because we want to minimize the risk of possible difficulties,” Jose said.
So far in the last 14 days, there were no untoward APEC-related incidents recorded.
This was also the assurance of the police and the Cebu provincial government. (rmn/fcc/PIA7-Cebu)
