Aspire To Be No. 1, Baldoz Tells The National Maritime Polytechnic

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday urged the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) to continue its quest to upgrade the skills of Filipino seafarers through specialized and safety courses and to continue conducting researches useful for policy formulation and for practical application in the enhancement of the competitiveness of Filipino seafarers.

A government maritime training and research agency attached to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the NMP celebrates its foundation anniversary on Sunday, 1 May 2016.

“As the government’s premier maritime training center, the NMP has an important role to play to guarantee and sustain our Filipino seafarers’ excellence in seamanship that continually rates them high in international maritime standards,” said Baldoz.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the 38th founding anniversary of the NMP, Secretary Baldoz said the NMP should always be on its toes in addressing the training needs of Filipino seafarers, even as shehighlighted the notable accomplishments of the maritime training agency.

“The Philippines is known for producing top-notch and the best in seafarers global maritime, and so the NMP should aspire to be the number one training center in producing not only the finest officers and ratings, but also in producing maritime experts and policy makers,” said Baldoz.

The NMP, she said, has contributed a lot to the development of the Philippines’ maritime industry, in terms of enhancing the Filipino seafarers’ competitiveness all over the world.

Last year, the government’s maritime agency, whose main campus is based in Brgy.Cabalawan, Tacloban City, was cited by the Department of Labor and Employment through Memorandum 630, Series of 2016 for successfully improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its quality management system.

In 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2010, the NMP was also recognized by the Public Services Labor Independent Confederation (PSLINK) for its contribution and support to the local union in the establishment of relevant programs that promote just, reasonable, and favorable working and living conditions that greatly benefited its employees and trainees.

As the government’s top maritime training institution, the NMP envisions a “World-Class Maritime Center of Excellence”, the NMP was granted by the Commission on Audit (COA) and by the Association of Government Accountants in the Philippines (AGAP) the Quality and Excellence in Government Financial Management Award for its contribution to sound government financial management, along with being the first national government agency to have implemented the e-NGAs.

In 2000, the NMP was certified compliant to ISO 9000:1994 by the Anglo-Japanese-American (AJA) Registrars. It was also awarded the “Special Recognition from the Office of the President” for being one of the 40 government offices in the country with ISO certification.

The NMP is governed by a Board of Trustees, with the Secretary of Labor and Employment as Chairman.
