Are Pet Owners Healthier?
Many people see owning a pet as a big responsibility, which it definitely is. What might not be as obvious is that owning a pet is actually good for your health. Here are some of the amazing benefits:

1. Having a furry (or even a scaly) friend helps lower your heart rate.
Owning a cat, dog, or even a goldfish can help reduce your heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce stress. There are plenty of medical waiting rooms with fish tanks, and those fish are there for a healthy reason!

2. A four-legged friend is a great excuse to exercise.
Being a dog owner takes a great amount of time and commitment, but the bright side is that they encourage you to get outside and go for a walk. Animals need exercise just like people do. If you have a hard time justifying just going for a walk for your own health, having a dog is a wonderful reason to get out and start moving.

3. Owning a pet can help fight depression.
Those who suffer from mild forms of depression, loneliness and/or isolation can benefit from the social advantages of meeting other dog owners while walking theirs. Pets also are a great distraction from the daily stress of life that bogs us down. A pet picks you up when you’re feeling down, will love you unconditionally, and will never judge you.

4. Animals can affect your hormone levels – in a good way.
There’s a reason why cuddling with a furry cat or dog feels so good. Cuddling releases serotonin, which is a chemical that gives off a “happy” feeling. Also, the levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, are lowered when you pet a companion animal.

5. Dogs can help take care of you.
There are many cases where dogs have alerted their owners about a fire or an intruder in the house. Some dogs are able to alert owners prior to having seizures and can even detect cancer. Animals have better hearing, vision and sense of smell than humans. Having a pet in your home can save your life!
