Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña in his message to the participants of the Anti-Drug Congress and Implementation on Best BADAC stressed that “If you think you can stop drugs, you will burn out. This is a forever problem, just like peace and order. So you just take concrete steps in reducing the problem.”

Sixty eight barangays represented by their respective barangay captains, and BADAC officials attended the three-day summit with the theme “Inabagan Barangay-Kasayuran Paladman, Illegal nga Droga Undangan, Serbisyo Dungagan,” formally opened yesterday, March 14 and will run until Friday, March 16 at the Crown Regency in Guadalupe, this city.

Mayor Osmeña added that “curiosity is number 1 attraction to drugs. A profile of an addict as compared to other crimes, this is a crime where victims are willing. They are in isolation. They have poor connections to the community. No guidance from their parents and friends. To counter this, you have to connect with them and it takes time.”

He further said that “I would rather teach children about the ill effects of drugs inside the classroom rather than outside the classroom. Do not pretend that they will not know about it.”

The summit aims to strengthen the role of the Barangay Anti Drug Abuse Council (BADAC)to eradicate illegal drugs in their respective barangays in coordination with the local police and the local government through information education campaign and other worthwhile activities which will help divert the attention of these drug dependents to a more productive community.

COSAP Executive Director Garry Lao in his welcome remarks, urged the participants to be more vigilant in their respective barangays and report any unusual activities to their office for assistance.

Others who attended the summit were DILG Region 7 Director Atty. Rene Burdeos, CESO III, PDEA-7 Regional Director Dir. III Emerson Margate, and PSupt. Chyrel Boniao who also gave insights and assurance of their respective offices full cooperation in the thrust of the Cebu City Government’s Anti-Drug Campaign. (Farlash Acenas / PIO)
