Cebu Province Ready for CVIRAA 2018 with High Hopes
A top official of the Department of Education in the Cebu Province is optimistic that its delegation can replicate its last year’s better showing as the 2018 Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) Meet opens tomorrow, Feb. 25 at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex here.
“It is a difficult task to dislodge the defending champion Cebu City. But if we can’t do it this year, at least we will be able to maintain our second-place finish in 2017,” said Nenita Jaralve, assistant athletics manager of DepEd-Province.
According to Jaralve, the unified training of athletes coupled with the assistance of the Cebu Provincial Government, through the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC), has practically paid off in improving the athletes’ performance last year.
The Cebu Province placed fourth in 2016 but bounced back the following year where it wound up second place in the final medal count.
This year, the Cebu Provincial Government gave P10 million to DepEd to cover the expenses for the athletes training and cost of competing in the annual multi-sporting event.
The Cebu Province sent a 1,000-strong delegation, 800 of which are athletes.
Lawyer Ramil Abing, executive director of the CPSC, was also upbeat of Cebu Province’s bid to improve its ranking in this year’s meet.
Abing said Gov. Hilario P. Davide III has been providing financial support to the athletes, as well as training and equipment in preparation for Cviraa, which serves as qualifier for the Palarong Pambansa.
Meanwhile, the ball games started yesterday with the Cebu Province blanking host Tagbilaran City, 14-0 in the elementary baseball.
In the evening, organizers hosted a welcome dinner for Cebu’s delegates.
Today, around 14,000 delegates composed of athletes, officials and coaches from 19 school divisions will converge in the Carlos P. Garcia Sports complex at 3 p.m. for the opening ceremony.
