The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) celebrates its 23rd anniversary this February with the theme “23 Taong Serbisyo Alay Sa Mamamayang Pilipino”.

The celebration coincides with the anniversary of the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP) created by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1400, s-2007.

PhilHealth, which is a government corporation primarily tasked to administer the country’s social health insurance program, will devote the entire 2018 to increase public awareness on PhilHealth’s programs and services and to encourage utilization of their membership privileges in times of need.

PhilHealth Regional Vice-President for Western Visayas, Lourdes F. Diocson cited the importance of PhilHealth in providing financial risk protection to the healthcare needs of the Filipinos.

Through the years, PhilHealth has made major strides especially in areas of membership, benefit availment, and provider engagement.

As of December 2017, PhilHealth has enrolled 94% of the entire population of Western Visayas.

According to data, total membership in Western Visayas is at  7,246,801 (including members and dependents) against the projected population of 7,708,905. Indigent Program has the most dominant members, followed by the Formal Economy or those gainfully employed.

On the other hand, PhilHealth has paid  more than P6.6 billion for 657,448 filed claims from January to December.

Trend of claims for reimbursement for three (3) consecutive years are hemodialysis, as being the top paid claim with 12,031 cases followed by pneumonia with 5,964 confinements.

The top paid facilities are Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Western Visayas Medical Center, and Dr. Pablo O. Torre, Sr. Memorial Hospital, respectively.

”Our paid claims are escalating annually because of the increasing number of members seeking medical care and the wider and more responsive health benefits,” said Diocson.

Meanwhile, as to engagement provider, PhilHealth has accredited 568 private facilities and 147 government providers.

“PhilHealth has recognized the basic tenet that accessibility of  healthcare services is a basic right of  all Filipinos,” Diocson said.
