Cebu City Council Passes Ordinance Granting Php10,000 Cash Aid To Public Tutors
The Cebu City Council has passed an ordinance granting a Php10,000 annual cash assistance to all qualified public elementary and high school teachers in the city.
Cebu City Councilor Lea Japson, author of the ordinance, said this is expected to benefit some 5,300 public school teachers in the city.
She said there is a need to alleviate the plight of public school teachers, who are among the underpaid professionals.
“School teachers are considered as second parents to our children in the classroom during their time away from home and they play an important role in molding the young to be good and responsible citizens when they grow up,” Japson said.
Under the ordinance, all public school teachers, whether city residents or not, who have rendered at least one year of teaching will be qualified to receive the Php10,000 annual cash assistance every year.
The ordinance sets the distribution of the financial assistance every December.
A Php50.150-million allocation for the cash incentives will be included in the general fund of the city’s annual budget.
The city has been giving Php10,000 cash assistance to all qualified public elementary and secondary teachers even before the passage of the ordinance.
In 2015, the city set aside Php55 million for the grant that covered teachers in 140 public elementary and high schools in the city. (PNA) SCS/EB/PJN
