Bulusan Volcano Emits Ash Twice

(PNA) — The Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province exploded twice within a period of 20 minutes Tuesday morning.

The volcano first emitted ash at about 11:02 a.m. then repeated the activity at about 11:20 a.m.

Mt. Bulusan is presently under alert level 1 and this time, it spewed ash to a height of 500 meters, which the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said was due to a phreatic explosion.

The thickness and height of the ash explosion brought darkness in some parts of the area, placing the residents on alert for immediate evacuation if the need calls for it.

Members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) immediately went to the area to check if there is a need to evacuate the villagers living at the foot of Mt. Bulusan.

It has placed military and police vehicles on standby to conduct an evacuation of the affected residents to a safe place to achieve the zero casualty policy of the local government unit.

PDRRMC officials are also still checking if there are damages to persons, homes and infrastructure as a result of the sudden ash explosion.
