Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II called on local officials to cooperate in fighting corruption and poverty.

In a speech before the local officials of Butuan in Agusan Del Norte on Wednesday where he turned over patrol cars for the police, Roxas cited the story of good samaritan officer PO2 George Jalandoni who paid for the anti-rabies shot of an old woman in San Lazaro Hospital.

“Pumasok tayo sa serbisyo publiko para tumulong sa mga lola, sa mga bata, sa mga walang laban. Kaya tayo narito para lumaban para sa kanila(We entered public service to help our elderly, youth and other helpless citizens. The reason of us being here is to fight for them),” Roxas said.

Roxas explained the vehicles are part of a holistic plan to support policemen with adequate equipment and training to ensure the efficient performance of their duties.

Ten municipalities in the province were given one patrol jeep each to be used in responding to crime and emergency situations.

Meanwhile, in another turnover ceremony in Bukidnon, the DILG turned over 20 police patrol units to the mayors and representatives of 20 municipalities in Bukidnon.

Roxas stressed the importance of the patrol jeeps Bukidnon in keeping the peace and order situation in northern Mindanao’s food basket. He explained the vehicles can be used not only in responding to crime but also in delivering services in times of disaster.

The DILG is set to distribute 1,490 police patrol vehicles to every municipality nationwide which is expected to be finish this October. (PNA) CTB/CLTC/with a report by Jarren Hill S. Repedro (OJT)
