Zambo City Welcomes Martial Law Extension
The local government unit here expresses its support to the extension of Martial Law.
Reports and observations from the police and military shows that since 2017, the movements of threat groups and lawless elements in the southern part of the country have been reduced and Martial Law in Mindanao resulted to the decrease of criminalities especially in Zamboanga Peninsula Region.
“The City Government of Zamboanga supports the extension of martial law to further address threats and concerns,” Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar said.
Last December 12, 2018, the 17th Congress approved the extension of Martial Law in Mindanao for another year or until the end of 2019.
Climaco-Salazar expressed her support for military rule with the improvement of the peace and order in the city.
The police also developed its drive against loose firearms by setting up at least 11 stationary checkpoints especially in crime-prone barangays.
With the extension of martial law, the city government hopes that this will bring more improvement in the security of Zamboanga City.
On May 23, 2017, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte issued Proclamation No. 216 declaring state of martial law and suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in the whole of Mindanao.
Residents in Zamboanga City have expressed their support for President Duterte’s martial law declaration, and cited that it has been instrumental in maintaining peace and security. (ALT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
