Youth Takes Proactive Part in Mega Cebu via Club Mega
In two separate launches in their respective campuses, the University of San Carlos (USC) and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) take part in the development of a more liveable and sustainable Mega Cebu through Club Mega.
Club Mega is a youth organization that aims to engage students at all levels in the journey towards achieving the Mega Cebu vision, which is “a vibrant, equitable, sustainable and competitive environment that embraces Cebu’ s creativity and its cultural, historical and natural resources, with strong citizen participation and responsive governance.”
The new organization, which is sanctioned by the committee behind Mega Cebu, recognizes that the youth today is the future recipients of the fruits of all endeavors toward a Mega Cebu.
“This is why it is important that the youth become champions of Mega Cebu and align its efforts with that of the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board (MCDCB) in building a Cebu that is wholesome, advanced, vibrant, equitable, and sustainable,” Club Mega organizers said.
In the succeeding weeks following the launch last Feb. 9 at USC and Feb. 13 at USJR, Club Mega members will be planning and implementing projects that are aligned with the attributes of the Mega Cebu program, including cultural and historic; innovative, creative and competitive; inclusive, equitable and livable; interconnected and compact; green; and integrated, coordinated and participative.
MCDCB Co-Chair Gordon Alan Joseph and Engr. Jun Sanchez, chair of Mega Cebu Sub-Committee on Infrastructure and Utilities, spoke to students during the USC launch, both pointing out the need for an ideal integrated environment for the residents of Cebu as the province’s economy continues to grow.
Micmic Kindica, a fourth-year USC Architecture student, also presented “The Stimuloop,” an architecture project designed for a better city structure in Cebu particularly Mactan Island with the renovated airport at the heart of the development scheme.
At the USJR launch, Evelyn Nacario-Castro, executive director of Mega Cebu-Research, Planning, Organizing and Development, called on students to take courage in making a positive change individually and daily because doing so contributes to a Mega Cebu.
Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herell, a Josenian, who was not able to attend due to conflict in schedule, showed a video encouraging students to inspire others.
Other highlights of the launch include the turnover of “Laag,” a tourist-friendly mobile application created by the students of USJR College of Information Computer and Communication Technology, to the Department of Tourism; announcement of the school’s first electric jeepney; and recognition of winners of last year’s Mega Cebu Month activities.
Club Mega will be replicated in others schools in the 13 local government units covered by Mega Cebu.
