World’s Top Scientists Pledge Against Killer AI
With the increasing threat of artificial intelligence (AI) military systems, thousands of the world’s leading AI firms, organizations, researchers, and scientists banded together and signed the Lethal Autonomous Weapons Pledge.
The Lethal Autonomous Weapons Pledge aims to effectively outlaw the development, manufacturing, trade, and application of life-threatening artificial intelligence (AI) weapon systems and robots. Considering there are no significant norms, laws, measures, and regulations banning lethal AI systems, the pledge expressively highlights the danger in giving AI machines the power to kill.
To date, over 170 AI-related organizations and 2500 individuals signed the faith-restoring and empowering pledge.
Notable signatories include Google DeepMind co-founders Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman; and SpaceX CEO and CTO Elon Musk, and other scientists specializing in AI. Organizations who pledged against lethal AI development also include Google DeepMind, Clearpath Robotics/OTTO Motors, University College London, and GoodAI.
Boston-based The Future of Life Institute orchestrated the all-too-relevant pledge. The full text is found in the acting organization’s official website futureoflife.org/lethal-autonomous-weapons-pledge. (Adapted by Lara Angeli Eviota)
