Tacloban City (PNA) — International humanitarian organization World Vision will mobilize 3,406 residents in this city to clean up their communities through a month-long drive designed to remove the remaining debris after super typhoon Yolanda.

Each worker will be hired on a cash-for-asset basis, getting PHP260 pay for four hours work within their community, said Jeremy Kilday, director of operations for World Vision’s Typhoon Yolanda response.

The group of workers are tasked to clean up their own village for 10 days. Covered areas are the villages of Kalipayan, Reclamation area, Sabang, Picas, Sampaguita, Quarry Rizal Extension, and Siren.

The activity, which started last week, is designed to help communities who are in dire need of assistance in order to have a new safer environment for children.

Specifically, villagers will be involved in street sweeping, coastal cleanup and creek declogging.

“The cleanup is the first step; it is our plan to foster ideas with these communities to work on restoring community assets that provide children safer places to play,” Kilday said

“Each village has different needs in order to make their community safer. We are working with village officials to work on fixes that can be done quickly, to provide maximum impact,” he added. (PNA) JBP/SQM/APRIL MAE O. ESPADA, LNU INTERN
