Wikipedia will soon integrate artificial intelligence into its editing ecosystem, but not to replace its vast community of editors and volunteers. The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind the site, announced Wednesday a new AI strategy focused on using generative tools to support, rather than substitute, human contributors.

This comes as concerns continue to rise globally over AI’s impact on content creation jobs, including fears of misinformation and displacement of human labor. Rather than removing the human element, Wikipedia’s plan aims to make editing easier by automating repetitive tasks, improving translation workflows, and assisting in onboarding new volunteers. These features are expected to free up time for more deliberative and consensus-based editing processes.

“Our efforts will use our long-held values, principles, and policies (like privacy and human rights) as a compass: we will take a human-centered approach and will prioritize human agency,” said Chris Albon, director of machine learning at the Wikimedia Foundation. He and Leila Zia, the Foundation’s head of research, jointly penned the announcement outlining the organization’s three-year AI roadmap.

Furthermore, Wikipedia will utilize open-source and open-weight AI models to promote transparency and ensure public trust in how the platform evolves. The foundation emphasized that this shift will not only benefit contributors but also readers by improving how information is discovered on the site.

Moreover, the team aims to eliminate “technical barriers” that prevent users from contributing effectively. This includes integrating AI-assisted tools to help moderators and patrollers manage and maintain the integrity of content without needing extensive technical expertise.

“We believe that our future work with AI will be successful not only because of what we do, but how we do it,” the post reads, signaling the foundation’s intent to preserve the values that have long guided Wikipedia’s growth.

Meanwhile, the initiative will take special care to maintain Wikipedia’s multilingual reach, addressing one of the most critical challenges of global information equity. AI tools will support editors in different languages to ensure consistent and reliable coverage across geographic regions.

The Wikimedia Foundation acknowledged that the growing influence of generative AI technologies has made it more important than ever to safeguard Wikipedia’s role as a trusted knowledge source. With generative AI sometimes producing factual errors or “hallucinations,” human oversight remains central to the platform’s mission. (GFB)
