Warm, Humid Days Ahead — PAGASA
Manila — Government forecasts warm and humid weather in the country during the five-day period ending Saturday (Aug. 1), expecting no major weather disturbance then.
“We’re also experiencing a monsoon break,” Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather forecaster Cris Perez said Tuesday (July 28) during a climate briefing in Metro Manila.
He noted PAGASA isn’t ruling out occurrence of isolated rain showers and thunderstorms particularly during afternoons and evenings, however, so people must prepare accordingly.
According to PAGASA, the southwest monsoon consisting of warm, moist winds from the southwest causes rains over the country’s western portion from May to September annually.
“The southwesterlies aren’t dominant at present so we’reexperiencing a monsoon break,” said Perez.
Latest available data show winds from the east and southeast are dominant over northern and central Luzon, he said.
Winds from the east are dominant elsewhere in the country at present, he continued.
For Tuesday to Thursday (July 30), Perez said PAGASA forecast the country to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.
PAGASA data also indicate reactivation of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) embedded with expected entry of a low-pressure area (LPA) east of Luzon on Friday (July 31) will affect the Visayas and Mindanao later this week, bringing scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
“Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon and early evening,” he also noted.
Perez said there’s small chance for the LPA to form so PAGASA forecasts warm and humid weather in the country during the reference period. (PNA) CTB/CJT/EDS
