Viva Pit Señor! Sinulog 2020 is Just Around the Corner

The holiday is over but for Cebuanos there is still another celebration to be excited for and it is the annual Sinulog Festival.

Celebrated every third Sunday of January, Sinulog Festival is a religious event in honor of the Child Jesus, Señor Santo Niño.

Aside from the religious aspect of the festival, it is also famous for its festive parties and Sinulog Parades where graceful dancers that wear colorful tribal costumes dance the Sinulog on the streets of Cebu.

The Sinulog dance has a religious origin, it is the ritual graceful prayer dance in honor of the Santo Nino or the Child Jesus that moves to the beat of the drums which resembles the “Sulog” or current of a river of what was then known as Cebu’s Pahina River thus in Cebuano, they say it’s SINULOG. More than just the meaning of the word is the significance of the dance.

The shouting of “Viva Pit Señor” and “Viva Señor Santo Niño” is one of the many traditional chants or expression during Sinulog. The expression is a shortened version of the Cebuanos phrase “Sangpit sa Senor” which means to ask, to appeal or a chant of prayer for one’s wish. It can also be an expression of once gratitude for the blessings received from the infant Jesus.

Sinulog is a celebration not only for Cebuano’s but also for most Filipinos in the world that they brought the Sinulog festival culture to where ever country they are based, attracting millions of tourists and devotees to come home to Cebu each year to witness and celebrate the festival culture Sinulog.

Sinulog Foundation announced Sinulog 2020’s theme “Señor Santo Niño—Cause of our Unity and Charity” reminding us that Señor Santo Niño has brought us together not only to celebrate but also become compassionate to one another.
