Vanuatu Fears the ‘Worst’ from Cyclone ‘Pam’
Sendai, Japan – The head of Vanuatu said on Sunday that he fears the impact from a devastating tropical storm will be “the very, very, very worst” in isolated outer islands, while the damage was still being assessed.
President Baldwin Lonsdale, in a report, said most houses in the capital Port Vila had been damaged by Cyclone Pam, a category 5 storm.
He said people are finding shelter where they can live for the night. Baldwin is currently in Sendai, Japan, where he was attending a UN disaster recovery conference.
Baldwin said the state of damage is still being assessed and they do not know exactly the extent of the damage, hoping
the number of casualties will be minor.
At least eight people have been confirmed dead but aid workers expect the number to rise as more information becomes available, report said.
