US Binge Drinking Kills Six People Daily – Study
New York (PNA/Sputnik) –- More than 38 million adults binge drink four times each month and 2,200 people die from alcohol poisoning every year in the United States, according to a study by the US government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“Alcohol poisoning deaths are a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of excessive alcohol use, which is a leading cause of preventable deaths in the US,” the CDC’s Principal Deputy Director Ileana Arias said in a statement Monday.
“We need to implement effective programs and policies to prevent binge drinking and the many health and social harms that are related to it,” she added.
Binge drinking is defined as consuming at least four drinks for women and five drinks for men. High levels of alcohol in the body can shut down areas of the brain that control breathing, heart rate and body temperature – leading to death. (PNA/Sputnik)FPV/SSC
