UPM, NAST Set To Empower Filipino Scientists This February
University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) College of Medicine and the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) will co-organize a two-day event, “Empowering Filipino Scientist in Nation Building”, at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City on February 17-18.
Organizers are expecting up to 500 leading scientists, physicians, health advocates, university faculty and students to attend the event, which will also serve as a celebration of UPM National Institute of Health’s 18th anniversary, 14th UP Manila Science & Technology Week, and 7th anniversary of the Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium (MMHRDC).
On Day 1, legislative reforms for empowering scientists will be tackled by Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV , while magna carta for scientists will be tackled by former Department of Science and Technology (DOST) chief Estrella Alabastro. NAST president William Padolina, on the other hand, will discuss the role of scientists in nation building.
Current DOST Secretary Mario Montejo and Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette Garin are also expected to deliver inspirational messages.
Aside from various symposia, attendees will hear the legislation for improving productivity and retention of Filipino scientists on the second day. The legislation will be presented by AKBAYAN Party-list Representative Ibarra “Barry” Gutierrez.
